The Young Activists Summit, established in 2019, has become a vital platform for empowering young leaders striving to uphold human rights and safeguard the environment. The theme for this year’s Summit, “Go Far, Go Together,” highlighted the inspiring stories and significant contributions of five Laureates aged 19 to 30. These individuals confront urgent global issues such as climate change, sexual harassment, homelessness, and racism through innovative and community-focused solutions. This year’s laureates encompass a diverse array of activism: Marley Dias promotes diversity in literature, Shanley Clemot McLaren fights against online gender-based violence, Alvaro Quiroz uses art to empower the homeless, Cynthia Houniuhi leads legal efforts to address climate challenges, and Sohanur Rahman advocates for climate justice and democratic reforms in Bangladesh. Sohanur Rahman, nominated by the EU Ambassador in Bangladesh, has been a passionate advocate for climate justice since childhood, when he experienced the destructive consequences of super-cyclone Sidr. His organization, YouthNet for Climate Justice, engages and raises awareness among younger generations about the pressing climate crisis. In 2019, his efforts contributed to the Bangladeshi Parliament declaring a climate emergency and halting the construction of ten coal plants. Recently, Sohanur and his organization played a critical role in student protests that led to significant political changes in the country. During his visit to Geneva, Mr. Rahman met with EU Ambassador Lotte Knudsen as well as young professionals from the EU Delegation and Member States Missions, showcasing the significance of collaboration in tackling global challenges. This Summit serves as an inspiration for young activists everywhere, as emphasized by last year’s laureate Maimouna Ba, who remarked on the Summit’s transformative impact: “For me, the Young Activist Summit was quite literally a new breath of air.” As we reflect on the dedication and achievements of these young activists, it becomes evident that they are catalysts for meaningful change, addressing systemic issues that affect communities around the world. Their collective efforts exemplify the importance of youth engagement in shaping a more just and sustainable future.
