In September 2023, a powerful earthquake in central Morocco led to nearly 3,000 fatalities and significant displacement. USAID/BHA has provided over $970,000 to support relief efforts in affected regions, focusing on emergency shelter and sanitation. Partner organizations have distributed essential supplies and initiated programs to improve housing conditions, addressing the pressing needs of the displaced populations.
On September 8, 2023, a devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck central Morocco, resulting in significant loss of life and injury. Reports indicate that 2,946 individuals perished, while approximately 5,700 were injured, particularly in the Marrakech-Safi and Souss-Massa regions. Additionally, over 500,000 people were displaced, with nearly 60,000 housing units destroyed or damaged between September 8 and 14, 2023.
In response to this humanitarian crisis, the United States Agency for International Development’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (USAID/BHA) has been actively involved in ongoing support and relief efforts throughout 2024. Addressing acute humanitarian needs in the affected provinces, initiatives included providing first aid in community shelters, distributing essential goods, and enhancing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services. Survivors faced challenges finding adequate shelter, particularly during extreme seasonal temperatures between September 2023 and September 2024.
The response from USAID/BHA and partner organizations such as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Moroccan Red Crescent Society (MRCS) highlights the critical need for continued humanitarian assistance in Morocco. Despite ongoing support, many families remain unable to initiate repairs to their homes due to various obstacles. As efforts to address shelter and sanitation needs progress, additional support is essential to ensure long-term recovery for affected communities.
