Over 80 Killed in Recent Violence in Southern Sudan, Warns UN

The United Nations reported over 80 deaths due to violence in southern Sudan, particularly in Kadugli. Renewed fighting between the army and the SPLM-N faction has worsened an existing humanitarian crisis, leading to severe food shortages. The situation requires immediate attention to prevent further deterioration of living conditions for millions.

The United Nations has reported that violence in southern Sudan has resulted in at least 80 fatalities, particularly concentrated in the city of Kadugli, South Kordofan. Fighting erupted last week between the Sudanese army and a faction of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) led by Abdel Aziz al-Hilu. UN humanitarian coordinator Clementine Nkweta-Salami condemned disturbing practices such as the use of civilians as human shields and obstruction of humanitarian assistance in the conflict zones.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in conflict primarily between its army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis. The fighting has exacerbated food insecurity, pushing millions into dire conditions. The SPLM-N faction led by al-Hilu has also engaged in hostilities against both the army and the Rapid Support Forces amidst this ongoing conflict, intensifying the crisis in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states.

The UN has raised urgent concerns regarding the escalating violence in southern Sudan, especially the humanitarian implications of the recent clashes. The death toll and growing food insecurity highlight an urgent need for humanitarian aid and intervention. Without immediate action, the situation may worsen, affecting the lives of countless civilians who are already suffering.
