The Nigerian Senate is probing serious allegations from Niger’s General Tchiani, who alleges that the Nigerian government is undermining Niger’s security with foreign connivance. The Senate has tasked its committees with an investigation into militia bases in Nigeria linked to these claims. Tchiani’s accusations have raised concerns about Nigeria’s diplomatic relations as it seeks to stabilize the region amid ongoing tensions.
The Nigerian Senate has initiated an investigation following serious allegations made by General Abdourahmane Tchiani, the military leader of Niger Republic. He has accused the Nigerian government of colluding with France to undermine Niger’s internal security. Consequently, the Joint Committees on National Security and Intelligence, along with Foreign Affairs, have been instructed to investigate militia bases in Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi States.
The allegations arose amidst already strained diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Niger, exacerbated by a coup in Niger in July 2023. General Tchiani has implicated Nigerian officials, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and former National Intelligence Agency Director-General Ahmed Rufai, in purported conspiracies. He claims that Nigeria has been supporting a terrorist group named Lakurawa in the North-West, allegedly allowing them to establish bases in the aforementioned states.
The investigation aims to address the serious allegations impacting Nigeria’s reputation and relations with neighboring countries. It emphasizes the need for substantiated evidence when making claims against national security figures. The Senate’s actions underscore their authority in safeguarding national interests and the importance of maintaining stable international relations.
