10,152 Indian Nationals Detained in 86 Countries, Reveals Government

The Indian government reported that there are 10,152 Indians imprisoned in 86 countries, with the largest numbers in Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Nepal. Including 2,684 under trial, 54 face death sentences. The Indian missions are committed to assisting these individuals, which includes checking on their welfare and providing legal support. Moreover, 307 Indian fishermen are currently detained abroad.

The Indian government has reported that there are a total of 10,152 Indian nationals currently incarcerated across 86 countries. This information was disclosed in Parliament by the Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, during a session in Rajya Sabha. Among these detainees, the largest groups are in Saudi Arabia (2,633), the United Arab Emirates (2,518), and Nepal (1,317).

Of the total number of incarcerated Indians, 2,684 are under trial in foreign jurisdictions. The minister emphasized the commitment of Indian missions abroad to assist Indians facing legal issues, including providing support for those sentenced to death. The assistance includes consular access and interventions to facilitate legal remedies such as appeals.

In addition to this, substantial numbers of Indian prisoners are found in Qatar (611), Kuwait (387), Malaysia (338), the United Kingdom (288), Pakistan (266), Bahrain (181), China (173), the United States (169), Italy (168), and Oman (148). Notably, the highest total of under-trial prisoners is also in Saudi Arabia, with 1,226 reported cases.

The Indian government has specifically highlighted that 54 Indian citizens are currently under death sentences in various countries, with UAE having the highest count at 29, followed by Saudi Arabia with 12. The ministry has reiterated its comprehensive efforts to provide logistical and legal support to these individuals through established diplomatic channels.

Furthermore, Marine issues have also been addressed, particularly concerning Indian fishermen, with 307 currently detained abroad. Countries like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain have reported significant numbers of detained fishermen. The government actively raises concerns about their welfare with foreign counterparts and has successfully negotiated the release of numerous fishermen in recent periods.
