President Bola Tinubu arrived in Ethiopia to attend the 38th AU Heads of State Summit. He was welcomed by key officials and later received a briefing on diplomatic achievements, including Nigeria retaining its seat on the AU Peace and Security Council. The summit’s theme focuses on reparatory justice and will involve discussions on security and climate change. The President is scheduled to return to Abuja on Monday.

President Bola Tinubu arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, late Thursday to attend the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government. His reception at the airport was conducted by Eshetu Legesse, the Ethiopian Deputy Chief of Protocol, alongside Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Amb. Nasir Aminu, charge d’affaires at the Nigerian embassy in Ethiopia.

Following the reception, Minister Tuggar provided President Tinubu with a briefing regarding the summit and recent diplomatic achievements, which lasted until around 2 a.m. on Friday. Among these accomplishments was the re-election of Amb. Bankole Adeoye as the African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security. Moreover, Nigeria successfully retained its seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council, showcasing its commitment to stability within the region.

The briefing was attended by key government officials, including Wale Edun (Minister of Finance), Abubakar Badaru (Minister of Defence), and Jumoke Oduwole (Minister of Trade and Investment), as well as other notable figures from Nigeria’s government. The ministers of aviation, information and national orientation, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency also participated in the discussions, emphasizing Nigeria’s proactive role in the AU.

This year’s AU summit adopts the theme “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” highlighting the focus on reparatory justice and racial healing initiatives. During the summit, President Tinubu is scheduled to deliver remarks at the African Union Peace and Security Council meeting, which will address pressing security issues, particularly the escalating conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Additionally, President Tinubu will engage in discussions focusing on health financing, the establishment of an Africa Credit Rating Agency, and challenges posed by climate change. He is expected to return to Abuja on Monday after participating in the summit’s pivotal meetings.

In summary, President Bola Tinubu’s participation at the AU summit in Ethiopia underscores Nigeria’s leadership role in fostering peace and security within the region. His engagement in crucial discussions on reparations, security, health financing, and climate change reflects the nation’s commitment to addressing significant continental challenges. The retention of Nigeria’s position on the African Union Peace and Security Council further affirms its diplomatic successes at the summit.
