Iran Acknowledges Communication with New Syrian Government Amid Leadership Changes

Iran has confirmed receiving messages from the new Syrian government after the ousting of Bashar al-Assad. The Iranian envoy stated that while communication is ongoing, the details regarding intermediaries remain undisclosed. Iran emphasizes the significance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty and insists on monitoring the evolving situation thoughtfully amid its historical alliances.

Iran has confirmed that it has received communications from the new Syrian government following the departure of former President Bashar al-Assad. Mohammad Reza Raouf Sheibani, Iran’s special envoy for Syrian affairs, stated that the Islamic Republic is in indirect contact with Damascus, as reported by the state-run IRNA news agency. He noted that Iran had also received messages from Syria but did not disclose the intermediary country that facilitated the exchange.

Sheibani elaborated on the situation, responding to Syria’s foreign minister, Asaad al-Shaibani’s remarks regarding relations with Iran. He expressed a positive outlook on the developments in Syria and emphasized that Iran monitors the situation with care. Iran, historically a close ally of Assad’s regime, had evacuated its diplomatic mission in Syria back in December when rebel forces led by current interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa seized control of the government.

President Sharaa suggested that Syria’s future depends on maintaining relationships with key regional players such as Iran. He insisted that the relations between Syria and Iran should be founded on mutual respect for sovereignty and a commitment to non-interference in each other’s affairs. Throughout Syria’s civil war, Iran provided significant assistance to Assad, which enabled him to regain control over large portions of the country.

In his previous role as Iran’s ambassador to Syria, Sheibani reiterated Tehran’s stance that the future of Syria must be determined solely by its people. He articulated Iran’s vested interest in Syria’s stability and peace, firmly opposing any foreign meddling in Syria’s internal matters.

In conclusion, Iran’s acknowledgment of communications with the new Syrian government signals a noteworthy shift following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad. Iranian officials maintain a commitment to monitoring Syria’s situation while advocating for a sovereign resolution to its internal issues, underscoring the importance of stable bilateral relations between the two nations despite the changes in leadership.
