This diplomatic conflict intensified after the RSF, led by General Hemedti, held discussions in Nairobi, despite Hemedti’s designation as a sanctioned individual by the United States for alleged crimes against humanity in Darfur. Kenyans have expressed confusion over President William Ruto’s facilitation of these meetings.
Sudan’s foreign ministry condemned Kenya’s actions, deeming them a violation of Sudanese sovereignty and an affront to the nation. They initiated the recall of their ambassador following the RSF’s announcement of plans to sign a charter for a “peace and unity government” at the Nairobi event.
The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, initiated in April 2023, has resulted in catastrophic humanitarian crises, claiming tens of thousands of lives and displacing over 12 million people. As of now, the army controls the northern and eastern portions of Sudan, while the RSF governs most of the west and significant southern regions.
International bodies, including the United Nations, have warned that the formation of a rival government may further exacerbate the fragmentation of Sudan, raising concerns regarding stability in the region. The Arab League has also voiced its condemnation of actions that could undermine Sudan’s unity.
Despite this, the Kenyan government defends its rationale for hosting the RSF, asserting it aligns with Kenya’s role in peace efforts. In response, Sudan accused President Ruto of prioritizing commercial interests potentially linked to the UAE’s alleged support for the RSF.
