The African Development Bank has signed a $44.9 million grant agreement with Chad to asphalt the 49.5-kilometer Kyabé-Mayo road section. This project aims to enhance infrastructure, facilitate transportation of goods, and improve local living conditions, particularly for women and youth. It also sets the stage for further funding to enhance the region’s transportation network.
The African Development Bank (AfDB) has formalized a grant agreement worth approximately $44.9 million with the government of Chad for the asphalting of the Kyabé-Mayo section, which measures 49.5 kilometers of the Kyabé-Singako road. The agreement was signed in N’Djamena on February 19, 2025, by Minister of State for Finance, Tahir Hamid Nguilin, and Claude N’Kodia, the AfDB’s Acting Representative in Chad. High-ranking officials from the Chadian government and a delegation from the International Monetary Fund attended the signing ceremony.
This financial support is aligned with Chad’s strategic goals to enhance infrastructure and stimulate economic growth. Nguilin noted the economic potential of the Moyen-Chari region, emphasizing its importance as Chad’s primary agricultural and livestock hub, which provides resources to both domestic and international markets.
The road project is designed to bolster connectivity in southern and eastern Chad, improve the resilience of vulnerable populations, particularly women and youth, and enable better transportation of goods and people. It will facilitate the flow of agricultural and livestock products to key consumer centers, enhancing access to markets across the region, including Sudan.
Moreover, this initiative sets the stage for further assistance from the Islamic Development Bank to finance an additional segment of the larger Mayo-Singako-Am Timan road, estimated to cost $275.5 million. N’Kodia remarked on the significance of the AfDB’s partnership with Chad, particularly in transportation, underscoring that the road will lower transport costs and improve living conditions for local inhabitants.
The Kyabé-Mayo segment is critical for completing the N’Djamena-Moundou-Sarh-Kyabé-Am Timan-Abéché transport corridor. It is a key part of the broader infrastructure development network that the Chad government aims to establish, ensuring far-reaching accessibility throughout the nation.
