INAM predicts the formation of two tropical cyclones, ‘Honde’ and ‘Garance’, between Thursday and Friday, impacting the southern and eastern parts of Madagascar. Honde is likely to bring strong winds and rainfall to Mozambique, while Garance poses no threat as it moves away from the mainland. INAM has urged safety measures for maritime navigation during this period.
The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) of Mozambique has forecasted the development of two tropical cyclones, named ‘Honde’ and ‘Garance’, between Thursday and Friday, in the southern and eastern regions of Madagascar. Cyclone Honde is currently situated approximately 250 km off the coast of Inhambane province, moving southwards toward Madagascar. As it progresses, it is expected to intensify into a tropical cyclone, generating strong winds within the Mozambique Channel and bringing moderate to heavy rainfall to select areas across the nation.
Meteorologist Lelo Tayob clarified that while tropical storm Honde itself remains offshore, its substantial size and atmospheric effects will still influence weather patterns on the mainland, leading to rainfall. “Its direct effects are at sea, but, due to the air masses, the rains will be felt on the mainland,” explained Tayob.
Tropical Storm Garance, located to the east of Madagascar, also shows potential for cyclone development but does not present a danger to Mozambique. Tayob remarked, “Tomorrow, [Tropical Storm Garance] will evolve into a tropical cyclone, but given its size, location and movement… it will not have an impact on the continental part of our country.” The storm is moving further away, thereby minimizing any significant influence on land.
INAM urges the populace to remain vigilant and adopt safety precautions, particularly during maritime navigation, due to the impending weather events.
The developments indicate the likelihood of severe weather resulting from these tropical systems, especially regarding impacts on marine conditions and local rain patterns.
In summary, INAM forecasts the potential formation of tropical cyclones Honde and Garance, with Honde expected to impact the Mozambique Channel significantly. Although Honde poses a risk for heavy rains and strong winds, Garance does not threaten the mainland as it moves eastward. The meteorological authority advises safety measures for maritime activities due to these developments.
