Türkiye has provided refuge for Sudanese students and academics affected by the ongoing civil war, helping them continue their education at Turkish universities. The initiative led by the Council of Higher Education enables institutions from Sudan to operate in Türkiye, demonstrating a commitment to collaboration and educational resilience amid the crisis in Sudan.
In light of the ongoing civil conflict in Sudan, Türkiye is offering substantial educational support to affected students and academics. El-Butana University students, whose education has been disrupted, have relocated to Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University in Türkiye, facilitated by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). This initiative reflects Türkiye’s commitment to educational continuity during crises.
YÖK has implemented the “Guest University Initiative,” allowing students from Sudanese institutions, such as Bahri and El-Neelain Universities, to continue their education at Selçuk University and Inönü University. Erol Özvar, President of YÖK, affirmed that the initiative fosters bilateral relations while setting a precedent for educational collaboration in the Islamic world.
The situation in Sudan remains dire, with ongoing clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces resulting in significant casualties and a humanitarian crisis affecting millions. YÖK has partnered with the Sudanese Ministry of Higher Education to ensure that educational opportunities persist despite the turmoil, with a strong commitment to not allowing universities to close.
Mohmoud Yacob Mohmoud, Rector of El-Butana University, acknowledged the challenges of transitioning to online learning due to resource shortages and expressed gratitude for Türkiye’s prompt assistance. He noted that this support would be instrumental in reforming Sudan’s educational landscape upon their return.
Sudanese students, such as Ferass Aiaaldeen Gahalrsoul Faragalla, are benefiting from advanced research facilities in Türkiye, which will enhance their academic and practical training. Similarly, Rashida Ebrahim Hussein remarked on the quality of education and technology accessible in Türkiye, viewing it as an opportunity for a new beginning in her academic pursuits.
