On Thursday, the UN Security Council issued a presidential statement urging the international community to support ongoing initiatives aimed at achieving lasting peace in Libya. The statement addressed various pressing issues as the nation grapples with instability and violent confrontations among competing authorities and armed factions.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to a political process that is inclusive, Libyan-led, and Libyan-owned, with the UN’s facilitation and international backing. Additionally, the Council expressed robust support for the Libyan populace’s right to determine their governance through elections, emphasizing the importance of political leaders heeding this legitimate demand.
The Council also called for comprehensive support of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative and the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) as they tackle the challenges ahead. In a previous address, the UN Special Representative, Abdoulaye Bathily, highlighted the shortcomings of the political process and announced a new mechanism to aid upcoming elections.
To further the quest for a sustainable solution to the Libyan crisis, the Council encouraged the Special Representative to utilize contributions from neighboring countries and regional organizations, specifically the African Union and League of Arab States. It called upon Libyan authorities to fortify border management and to ensure the protection of human rights, particularly for migrants and children, while taking steps to close migrant detention centers.
