CARICOM Urges Venezuela to Respect Guyana’s Sovereignty Amid Election Controversy

CARICOM has reiterated its support for Guyana in light of Venezuela’s intentions to conduct elections in the Essequibo region, viewing these actions as a breach of international law. The organization condemned a recent attack on the Guyana Defence Force and supported the ongoing judicial processes to resolve the territorial dispute. Overall, CARICOM emphasizes the importance of respecting Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

At the recent 48th Regular Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government, developments regarding the Guyana-Venezuela controversy were reviewed with notable concern. Heads of Government responded to statements made on 27 January 2025 by the President of Venezuela and the Chairman of its National Electoral Council, announcing plans for elections in Guyana’s Essequibo region. Such actions contradict international law and violate Guyana’s sovereignty as emphasized in prior agreements and court orders.

In light of Venezuela’s intentions, CARICOM leaders urged that Venezuela refrain from conducting these elections and from any intrusion into Guyana’s territory. They condemned a February 17, 2025 attack by armed Venezuelan individuals on the Guyana Defence Force, which heightened tensions along the border.

Additionally, CARICOM welcomed Venezuela’s submission of its counter-memorial regarding the validity of the 1899 Arbitral Award determining the boundary with Guyana and encouraged further participation in the judicial process. The organization reiterated its unwavering support for Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as the dispute is resolved through legal channels.

Thus, CARICOM remains committed to the principles of international law and the peaceful resolution of the Guyana-Venezuela controversy, emphasizing the essential need for dialogue and adherence to agreed-upon legal frameworks to uphold regional peace and stability.

In summary, CARICOM has officially expressed its strong opposition to Venezuela’s plans regarding elections in the Essequibo region, underscoring the violation of international law and Guyana’s territorial integrity. The organization condemned recent aggressive actions and reaffirmed support for Guyana in pursuing legal redress through the International Court of Justice. These collective efforts aim at ensuring peace and stability within the region.
