On February 24, Kuwait’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdullah Al-Yahya, led the Kuwaiti delegation at the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) held in Geneva. He underscored Kuwait’s commitment to human rights principles which are in alignment with both the nation’s constitution and religious tenets, as well as the UN charters and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Al-Yahya expressed Kuwait’s readiness to discuss and submit national periodic reports, highlighting the country’s establishment of a mechanism to efficiently monitor and evaluate its international commitments. Additionally, he mentioned ongoing comprehensive reviews of laws, particularly those pertaining to women and youth, aimed at enhancing and safeguarding human rights.
The Minister reiterated Kuwait’s preparedness to present its comprehensive report to the UNHRC in May. He stressed the global humanitarian responsibility toward the Palestinian people, condemning the Israeli occupation forces for violating international humanitarian law amid ongoing operations in Gaza.
Al-Yahya called upon the international community to fulfill its responsibilities in protecting Palestinians and their rights. He reaffirmed Kuwait’s steadfast position on establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, adhering to international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty and supporting the restoration of stability in Lebanon. The Minister condemned the violations of Lebanese sovereignty by Israeli forces and called for their withdrawal from Lebanese territory.
