Namibia’s Supreme Court dismissed an opposition challenge to last year’s presidential election, validating the results and allowing Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of the SWAPO party to take office next month. The court deemed the election extension lawful, upholding the results despite allegations of fraud. The IPC leader conceded to the court’s decision and affirmed no further protests would occur.
On Friday, Namibia’s Supreme Court dismissed an election challenge lodged by opposition parties against the results of last year’s presidential election. This ruling paves the way for Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of the SWAPO party to assume office next month. The SWAPO party, which has held power since Namibia’s independence, won both the presidential and parliamentary elections conducted in November.
The opposition groups alleged that the election was fundamentally flawed, citing issues such as the extended voting period as potentially invalidating the results. Chief Justice Peter Shivute upheld the legality of the voting extension and dismissed the claims made by the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), which finished second in the election. The IPC was supported in its legal challenge by the Landless People’s Movement.
Chief Justice Shivute stated, “Their challenge to the outcome for the 2024 presidential election … fails.” Following the court’s decision, IPC leader Panduleni Itula confirmed that his party would accept the ruling and would not engage in public demonstrations.
Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is set to make history as Namibia’s first female president with her swearing-in scheduled for March 21, celebrating a significant milestone in the country’s political landscape.
The Supreme Court ruling reaffirms the legitimacy of Namibia’s electoral process, allowing the SWAPO party to continue its longstanding governance. The dismissal of the opposition’s challenge by Chief Justice Shivute eliminates any legal uncertainties regarding last year’s election outcomes, ensuring a smooth transition to Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s presidency. Furthermore, the IPC’s commitment to respecting the judgment reflects a level of political stability amid controversy.
