Nujoma, who passed away at the age of 95, will be interred at Heroes’ Acre on March 1, a day declared a public holiday by President Nangolo Mbumba. Notably, last year, nearly 27 African leaders, including 18 sitting presidents, attended the state funeral of former president Hage Geingob.
Theofelus reported that confirmations have been received from various delegations, including notable dignitaries such as vice presidents, prime ministers, and heads of international organizations. Currently, countries including Angola, South Africa, and Mozambique have officially confirmed their attendance, with additional confirmations anticipated as the event approaches.
The founding president’s casket is expected to arrive today from Keetmanshoop, followed by a public viewing of the body at Parliament Gardens. The public has been advised against photographing the body during this period. A state memorial service is set for the afternoon at Independence Stadium, with public transport arranged for residents of Khomas Region to facilitate attendance.
In a related ceremony, Swapo spokesperson Hilma Nicanor announced that a statue of Nujoma will be unveiled at the party’s headquarters today. A memorial service is scheduled at Sam Nujoma Stadium, accompanied by a candlelight vigil held last night in memory of the late president.
Theofelus acknowledged the historical significance of the casket’s transportation across regions, apologizing for any shortcomings experienced during the preparations and expressing gratitude to the public for their patience and adherence to protocols during this solemn occasion.
