Soraya Hakuziyaremye has been appointed as the first female Governor of the National Bank of Rwanda. Soraya Hakuziyaremye, at 48 years of age, was appointed by President Paul Kagame as the new Governor of the National Bank of Rwanda (NBR) on February 25. She succeeded John Rwangombwa, who held the position for two terms starting in February 2013. Hakuziyaremye previously served as the deputy governor since March 2021 and has an extensive background in banking and government.
Before her role at NBR, Hakuziyaremye was the Minister of Trade and Industry from October 2018 to March 2021. The National Bank plays a crucial role in maintaining price stability and overseeing the financial system, key for Rwanda’s economic stability. In an interview with Emmanuel Ntirenganya from The New Times, Hakuziyaremye shared insights into her life, career, and personal interests.
Hakuziyaremye was born in Belgium to Rwandan parents and returned to Rwanda at the age of five. She completed her primary and secondary education in Rwanda and later pursued higher education in Belgium, studying business management at Solvay Business School. Her educational background paved the way for a successful career in banking, reflecting her passion for the finance sector.
Starting at the Bank of New York in Brussels, Hakuziyaremye later returned to school in the United States for a postgraduate degree in international management. Following that, she held various banking positions, eventually returning to Rwanda to contribute to her country’s development and policies while working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Hakuziyaremye’s interests extend beyond her career; she enjoys reading extensively, especially biographies, and has a passion for music, having sung in a choir for 12 years. In addition, she values physical fitness and enjoys sports and travel, seeking to understand diverse cultures.
She dislikes seeing opportunities wasted and strives to seize every chance presented, an ethos she emphasizes in her personal and professional life. Passionate about making a significant impact on her country, Hakuziyaremye is driven by the vision of making Rwanda a high-income nation in the future.
