Albania Expresses Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara

Albania has formally supported Morocco’s autonomy initiative for Western Sahara, calling it a credible resolution framework. A joint statement by both countries highlighted Albania’s renewed diplomatic position and their commitments to a UN-led resolution process and regional stability. Discussions also included enhancing bilateral cooperation across various domains, while Morocco offered visa exemptions for Albanian citizens traveling for tourism.

Albania has officially voiced its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan regarding Western Sahara, declaring it a “serious and credible foundation for the resolution of this regional dispute.” This declaration was made during a joint statement issued in Rabat by Igli Hasani, the Albanian Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, and Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The statement emphasized Albania’s recognition of the Western Sahara issue’s significance to Morocco and commended Morocco’s earnest efforts under the auspices of the UN to achieve a solution acceptable to all parties involved. This endorsement contributes to the increasing international backing for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, which envisions substantial self-governance while preserving Moroccan sovereignty.

Both ministers reaffirmed their dedication to a UN-led political resolution of the conflict, expressing support for Staffan De Mistura, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, in his endeavors to find a peaceful resolution in line with UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2756 (2024).

Albania’s support marks a significant milestone in Morocco’s diplomatic achievements concerning Western Sahara, joining the ranks of over 100 countries that recognize its sovereignty, including more than 20 in Europe. The Albanian diplomatic shift began around 2004, including a break with the separatist Polisario Front after prior recognition, solidifying further in 2015 with Albania’s official backing of Morocco’s territorial integrity.

In addition to addressing the Western Sahara issue, the discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation and regional concerns. Albania expressed keen interest in the Atlantic initiatives spearheaded by King Mohammed VI, particularly one set for November 6, 2023, aimed at improving Sahel countries’ access to the Atlantic Ocean.

The joint statement highlighted the mutual recognition of Morocco’s role as a stabilizing force in the region and noted Morocco’s acknowledgment of the impactful transformations in the Western Balkans that promote peace and stability. Additionally, Morocco lifted visa requirements for short stays for Albanian citizens to foster tourism and exchanges.

Both nations underscored their strong commitment to global peace, stability, and security, advocating for the peaceful resolution of conflicts while respecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Minister Bourita expressed his support for Albania’s aspirations to become an EU member and lauded the significant reforms undertaken by the Albanian government.

The meeting concluded with a pledge of continued consultation within international organizations and a commitment to enhancing economic, trade, and cultural cooperation between Albania and Morocco.

Albania’s endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy initiative for Western Sahara marks a significant diplomatic victory for Morocco, reinforcing its international support. The discussions between the two nations also laid an emphasis on broader bilateral cooperation, including Morocco’s assistance to Albania in its EU integration efforts. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to regional stability and peace, underscoring the importance of respecting national sovereignty.
