Turkey has become a pivotal educational refuge for Sudanese students displaced by civil conflict, enabling them to continue their studies at Nigde Omer Halisdemir University via the ‘Guest Universities Initiative.’ This initiative, orchestrated by Turkey’s Higher Education Council, provides essential support to ensure that Sudanese students can resume their academic pursuits safely and effectively amidst ongoing crises in Sudan.
Turkey has emerged as a sanctuary for Sudanese students and academics whose education has been interrupted due to the ongoing civil war in Sudan. Under the Turkish Higher Education Council’s ‘Guest Universities Initiative,’ students from Al-Butana University are now continuing their academic studies at Nigde Omer Halisdemir University. This initiative provides vital educational support and aims to safeguard Sudanese students during these turbulent times.
The civil war in Sudan, which has intensified since April 2023 due to conflicts between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, has resulted in massive displacement and loss of life. The UN reports state that over 20,000 individuals have died, while approximately 3.5 million have fled the nation. The internal crisis has also left nearly 9 million displaced within Sudan, affecting more than 25 million people who are in urgent need of humanitarian aid.
In response to the crisis, Al-Butana University facilities sustained considerable damage, challenging educational continuity. The Sudanese Ministry of Higher Education contacted Turkey’s Council of Higher Education for assistance. A rapid and collaborative response led to the establishment of the Guest University Initiative, connecting Al-Butana University with Nigde Omer Halisdemir University for student relocation.
This initiative has enabled 18 individuals, including university leaders, faculty, and students, to pursue their studies in a safe environment. It aims to prepare these individuals for eventual return to Sudan, where they can contribute positively to the nation’s development post-conflict. Türkiye’s model emphasizes educational continuity and support for Sudanese institutions in crisis.
Erol Ozvar, President of Türkiye’s Higher Education Council, elaborated on discussions with Sudan’s Ministry of Higher Education, acknowledging the critical need to support struggling universities in the region. He expressed a commitment to ensuring that educational institutions do not close down and instead continue to provide learning opportunities for students. The Sudanese officials welcomed the proposal for hosting Sudanese universities in Türkiye.
In addition to Nigde Omer Halisdemir University, other Sudanese institutions like Bahri University and Al-Neelain University are also set to collaborate with Turkish universities. Ozvar emphasized the importance of creating safe educational settings for Sudanese students and academics to foster their academic pursuits amid the ongoing crisis.
Rector Mohmoud Yacob Mohmoud of Al-Butana University acknowledged the devastation wrought by the civil war and praised Türkiye for its timely support. He expressed his gratitude, stating that Türkiye was the first nation to respond to their appeals for help. Upon arriving at Nigde Omer Halisdemir University, he recognized the significant educational advantages available in Turkey.
Students, such as Ferass Aiaaldeen Gahalrsoul Faragalla, now studying in advanced laboratories and research centers, are eager to return to Sudan with enhanced skills. They aim to utilize their newly acquired knowledge for the development of their home country. Fellow student Rashida Ebrahim Hussein also expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to engage with modern veterinary technology, which she will leverage upon her return to Sudan.
Turkey’s commitment to supporting displaced Sudanese students through educational initiatives illustrates its dedication to humanitarian aid and strengthening academic ties between the two nations. The Guest Universities Initiative not only provides immediate educational relief but also lays a foundation for future development in Sudan.
