Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in violent clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, resulting in acute displacement and a severe humanitarian crisis. The UN reports that over 20,000 lives have been lost, with more than 3.5 million fleeing the country, and nearly 9 million displaced within Sudan itself. Educational institutions, including Al-Butana University, have suffered significant damage, disrupting learning activities.
In response to the detrimental impact of the conflict on education, Sudan’s Ministry of Higher Education engaged Türkiye’s Council of Higher Education. In a proactive move, the council established the “Guest University Initiative,” leading to a partnership between Al-Butana University and Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University. This initiative facilitated the relocation of 18 individuals, including executives and students, ensuring they could pursue their educational goals.
The initiative adopts a unique “university within a university” approach, which not only safeguards Sudanese students and academics but also promotes the idea of their eventual return to contribute to Sudan’s development after graduation. In addressing the initiative, Türkiye’s Higher Education Council President Erol Özvar mentioned that the aim is to keep universities operational and prevent closures.
During discussions between the Turkish Council and Sudanese officials, Özvar stated, “We do not want universities to shut down” and emphasized the importance of continuity in education for the affected Sudanese institutions. He elaborated that arrangements have been made for other universities from Sudan, such as Bahri University, to receive assistance from Turkish institutions.
Türkiye’s commitment extends to providing a conducive learning environment for international students, with Özvar noting that past Turkish university graduates have taken on significant leadership roles back in their home countries. He expressed hope that Sudanese students would follow in this tradition, contributing positively to their nation.
Al-Butana University Rector Mohmoud Yacob Mohmoud acknowledged the dire circumstances stemming from the civil war, expressing gratitude for Türkiye’s immediate response to their plight. He highlighted the stark differences in educational resources available in Türkiye compared to Sudan, vowing to utilize his experience upon his return to improve Sudan’s education system.
Sudanese students, including master’s student Ferass Aiaaldeen Gahalrsoul Faragalla and undergraduate student Rashida Ebrahim Hussein, conveyed their appreciation for the opportunity to study in Türkiye. Faragalla noted the importance of the advanced research facilities, while Hussein expressed enthusiasm for acquiring practical skills that would benefit Sudan’s agricultural sector upon her return.
