Uganda Reports Second Ebola Death Amid Ongoing Outbreak

Uganda has confirmed its second Ebola death involving a four-year-old child amidst an ongoing outbreak declared in January 2023. The child, who was receiving care at Mulago Hospital, passed away recently. The health ministry has reported that while eight patients have been discharged, over 260 contacts remain quarantined, emphasizing the need for continued community vigilance.

The East African nation of Uganda has reported its second death from Ebola, specifically involving a four-year-old child. This follows the earlier announcement of an outbreak declared in January 2023 after a male nurse succumbed to the disease in Kampala at the Mulago National Referral Hospital. The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed the child’s passing, describing it as “tragically” occurring on a Tuesday while under care in the same hospital, noted for being the sole institution handling Ebola cases in the country.

As of February 18, the Ugandan health ministry indicated that all remaining eight Ebola patients had fully recovered and been discharged from care. However, the situation remains critical as at least 265 individuals who had contact with infected persons are currently under strict quarantine in Kampala and surrounding areas. The symptoms of Ebola include fever, headaches, and muscular pain, and the virus spreads through contact with the bodily fluids of infected persons.

In summary, Uganda faces a concerning Ebola outbreak with two reported fatalities, including a child. The government has made progress in managing the outbreak by discharging recovered patients, yet strict quarantine measures remain in place for hundreds of contacts. Ongoing vigilance is crucial as the country navigates the continuing spread of this infectious disease.
