On March 4, 2025, Guyana’s Prime Minister Brigadier (Retd) Mark Phillips arrived in New Delhi to participate in the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2025. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, remarked that the visit would enhance the multifaceted relationship between India and Guyana, particularly in areas concerning sustainable development and renewable energy.
The World Sustainable Development Summit is set to take place from March 5 to 7, focusing on ‘Partnerships for Accelerating Sustainable Development and Climate Solutions.’ It is an annual event organized by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), serving as a platform for multistakeholder collaboration in sustainability.
In a prior statement, Guyana’s Health Minister, Frank Anthony, expressed his country’s gratitude towards India for its critical support during the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically mentioning India’s provision of vaccines when other nations were hesitant to share. He highlighted India’s commitment to global health, even as it faced its challenges.
Anthony praised India’s advanced healthcare systems, indicating that Guyana seeks to emulate these practices. He noted that India’s comprehensive approach encompasses both preventive care and sophisticated medical treatment, providing significant learning opportunities for Guyana as it develops its healthcare framework.
Furthermore, Minister Anthony acknowledged previous visits by Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, emphasizing their contribution in fortifying bilateral relations. He expressed satisfaction with the signed agreements during these visits, particularly in the health sector, signifying a positive trajectory in India-Guyana cooperation.
