Kenya Strengthens Technology Collaborations with Ericsson, TikTok, and Malaysia

Kenya is strengthening its collaborations with Ericsson, TikTok, and Malaysia to drive innovation and attract IT investments as part of its digital transformation agenda. Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo emphasized the importance of these partnerships for economic growth and connectivity, while also acknowledging TikTok’s role in supporting local content creators. Discussions with Malaysia focused on strategic technological cooperation following a recent tech summit.

Kenya is enhancing its collaboration with technology company Ericsson, social media platform TikTok, and the Malaysian government to foster innovation and attract information technology investment. This initiative aims to accelerate the digital transformation of the nation, enabling economic growth while improving connectivity for businesses and individuals.

On March 4, 2025, William Kabogo, the Cabinet Secretary for Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications, and Digital Economy, held discussions with representatives from these organizations and shared updates via the social media platform X. Kabogo highlighted the importance of a robust telecommunications sector in unlocking new opportunities for the Kenyan populace.

He stated, “As we strive for a digitally inclusive economy, partnerships with the private sector remain crucial in improving lives, redefining industries, and shaping a sustainable future for all Kenyans.” This commitment showcases Kenya’s focus on leveraging technological advancements for national development.

In another significant engagement, Kabogo addressed TikTok’s impact, noting that a report by the Reuters Institute indicated that 54% of Kenyans surveyed utilize the platform, with 29% using it for news consumption. He emphasized that TikTok has provided considerable opportunities for Kenyan content creators.

“The Ministry and TikTok must continue exploring ways to enhance collaborations, ensuring that Kenyan creators earn competitively on the platform, just like their counterparts in other countries,” Kabogo remarked, although he did not discuss concerning trends identified regarding misuse of the platform by some teenagers.

Additionally, Kabogo met with Ruzaimi Mohammed, the Malaysian High Commissioner to Kenya, discussing bilateral relations centered around technological development. Their collaboration stems from the Malaysia-Kenya Tech Summit held in November 2024, which involved a memorandum of understanding aimed at supporting Kenya’s digital advancement.

Kenya’s collaboration with Ericsson, TikTok, and Malaysia represents a significant stride towards enhancing the nation’s digital landscape. These partnerships are crucial for fostering innovation, attracting IT investment, and ensuring a digitally inclusive economy. As the country navigates challenges and opportunities, the focus on engaging the private sector will be paramount in shaping its future.
