President Vladimir Putin has reiterated the strengthening relationship between Russia and Myanmar during a meeting with junta chief Min Aung Hlaing. As a significant arms supplier, Russia plays a critical role in supporting Myanmar’s military amid ongoing unrest. Both nations are exploring enhanced economic cooperation while facing Western sanctions.
On Tuesday, President Vladimir Putin acknowledged the strengthening of Russia’s relationship with Myanmar during a meeting with junta chief Min Aung Hlaing at the Kremlin. This connection is significant given that Russia serves as a vital arms supplier to Myanmar, which faces considerable domestic unrest against its military governance. Putin stated, “The relations between our countries are steadily developing,” emphasizing the potential for enhanced trade.
Min Aung Hlaing, who took power following a coup in 2021, praised Putin as a “king” and expressed solidarity with Russia regarding the military operation in Ukraine. He conveyed his belief in a decisive victory for Russia, affirming the alignment of both nations, which are currently experience severe sanctions from Western countries due to various geopolitical events.
Russia has engaged in exporting several goods, including raw materials and fertilizers, to Myanmar while both countries have discussed expanding their economic cooperation across military and political domains. Earlier, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin highlighted the opportunities for further collaboration in sectors such as energy, nuclear energy, transportation, agriculture, and telecommunications during the Myanmar delegation’s visit.
The military junta’s reliance on Russian military support, specifically for its air force, has intensified as it confronts a multitude of opposition forces and ethnic armed groups. Although they have lost significant territory in recent conflicts, access to Russian air support has been crucial in resisting adversarial advances. Since commencing military operations in Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has aimed to strengthen ties with anti-Western regimes globally, particularly in Asia and Africa.
