In North Darfur, Sudan, heavy shelling of the Abu Shouk market has resulted in fears of numerous fatalities among the displaced population. The paramilitary group, Rapid Support Forces (RSF), launched an attack lasting approximately two hours on Tuesday evening, according to local officials, further exacerbating the ongoing crisis in the region. This marked the second assault on the camp within a span of three days.
Abu Shouk houses over half a million displaced individuals, and Tuesday’s shelling occurred during peak shopping hours for those observing the holy month of Ramadan. Many residents were purchasing supplies to break their fast when the attack took place. Dr. Ibrahim Nadyan, a medic at the last functioning hospital in el-Fasher, reported several injuries, ranging from mild to severe, due to the shelling.
The RSF had conducted a similar attack on Abu Shouk just days prior, resulting in six civilian casualties, as reported by local health volunteers. Notably, the RSF has yet to issue a statement regarding either of the recent assaults. Since the conflict began in April 2023, it has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions, pushing many towards famine.
Both the RSF and the Sudanese army have faced accusations of heinous crimes, including genocide perpetrated by the RSF against non-Arab groups in Darfur. The ongoing war has divided Sudan, with the army maintaining control over the northern and eastern regions while the RSF governs the majority of the Darfur area and parts of the south. Recently, the army has regained control over certain regions in Khartoum and its vicinity from the RSF.
