Ethiopia is pursuing access to the sea, challenging the Tripartite alliance of Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia. Field Marshal Birhanu Jula declared the quest for sea access as a recognized issue and affirmed military readiness to defend this objective. The situation has escalated tensions as Ethiopia negotiates with neighboring states and seeks international support for its claims.
Ethiopia is resolute in its pursuit of access to the sea, as asserted by Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, the head of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF). During his remarks at the 129th anniversary of the Battle of Adowa, he described Ethiopia’s lack of coastline as “unjust” and emphasized that this quest is increasingly recognized as a legitimate issue by the international community. He stated, “It is only a matter of time before we become a member of the Red Sea community.”
This statement comes in light of recent technical discussions between Ethiopia and Somalia, held in Ankara, regarding Ethiopia’s request for maritime access. Field Marshal Jula emphasized the Ethiopian military’s preparedness, stating, “We are not preparing for minor disturbances; we are preparing to defend against external aggression.” He reiterated Ethiopia’s aim to secure national interests through peaceful methods while enhancing its military capabilities.
The situation is complicated by a coalition involving Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia, which opposes external interference in Red Sea affairs. Recently, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atty and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki reaffirmed their positions, insisting that no non-littoral states should engage in the region’s security. This coalition formed a Tripartite alliance, highlighting their commitment to protect Somalia’s sovereignty from any foreign involvement.
Ethiopia had previously entered into an agreement with Somaliland on accessing 20 kilometers of the Red Sea, a move met with opposition from Somalia, which called for international arbitration. Turkey has since mediated, facilitating dialogue between the conflicting parties to address the contentious issue of maritime access.
Ethiopia’s determination to secure maritime access is intensifying regional tensions, particularly with neighboring Egypt and Eritrea opposing these ambitions. The Ethiopian military’s readiness to defend its claims, coupled with diplomatic efforts involving Somalia and Turkey, reflects the complexities of Horn of Africa geopolitics. The evolving alliances and conflicts highlight the need for careful negotiations to ensure stability in the region.
