The European Parliament delegation recently visited the NHRI in Abu Dhabi to discuss the UAE’s advancements in human rights. They acknowledged the NHRI’s engagement in global human rights initiatives and recognized its role in promoting a human rights culture. This visit reflects the increasing international attention on NHRI’s contributions to human rights protection.

On February 28, 2025, a high-level delegation from the European Parliament visited the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) in Abu Dhabi, where they were informed about the UAE’s notable advancements in human rights. During the meeting, members of the delegation recognized the NHRI’s significant efforts in promoting a culture of human rights alongside its strategic directives and activities relevant to its mandate.

The delegation lauded the NHRI for its proactive engagement with both regional and international human rights organizations, particularly its participation in the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI). Maqsoud Kruse, Chairperson of the NHRI, along with Dr. Saeed Al Ghufli, Secretary-General of the NHRI, warmly welcomed the visitors, underscoring the importance of international recognition for their work.

Mr. Kruse remarked that the visit indicates how crucial international organizations view the NHRI’s role in advancing and safeguarding human rights. He reiterated the NHRI’s commitment to improving policies that uphold the UAE’s status as a leading authority in human rights by adhering to top international standards.

The delegation was headed by Reinhold Lopatka, who represents Spain in the European Parliament, and included key officials such as Abir Al-Sahlani, Vice-President, and other representatives from Spain. Additionally, the meeting was attended by Lucía Berger, the EU Ambassador to the UAE, and other political advisors from the European Union’s Middle East Affairs Department. This meeting marks the second visit by a European Parliament delegation, following an initial visit in 2022, reflecting the increasing global recognition of NHRI’s essential role in protecting human rights and promoting transparency.

In conclusion, the European Parliament delegation’s visit to the NHRI underscores the growing international acknowledgment of the UAE’s human rights efforts. The discussions highlighted the NHRI’s significant strategic role and its commitment to fostering a culture of human rights, enhancing the UAE’s position globally as a leader in this domain.
