On March 5, 2025, in Djibouti, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the Executive Secretary of IGAD, voiced serious concerns regarding escalating tensions and armed conflicts in Nasir County, South Sudan. Such unrest threatens the progress achieved through the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) and the broader peace in the nation.

Dr. Workneh emphasized the need for all involved parties to exercise maximum restraint and recommit to the R-ARCSS. He highlighted the importance of dialogue and reconciliation as essential elements for sustainable peace and called upon the Government of South Sudan and various stakeholders to intensify efforts towards de-escalation and civilian protection in the region.

In light of the crisis, IGAD plans to send a high-level delegation to assess conditions on the ground and to advise the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) on restoring calm and furthering the peace process.

As the guarantor of the R-ARCSS, IGAD remains dedicated to facilitating its full implementation and is actively collaborating with both regional and international partners to promote peace and security in South Sudan.

The escalation of tensions in Nasir County poses a significant threat to the peace efforts in South Sudan. H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu’s call for restraint and dialogue underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in maintaining stability.
