Ericsson Advances UNITEL’s 5G Network Evolution in Angola

Ericsson has successfully upgraded the core network for UNITEL S.A. in Angola, implementing advanced technologies such as the Ericsson dual-mode 5G Core, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), and Cloud Native Infrastructure. This transformative modernization enables 5G Standalone (5G SA) connectivity, enhancing digital services available to both businesses and consumers in Angola. The new infrastructure supports the integration of 4G and 5G technologies, delivering customized services via network slicing and improving voice and data services.

The dual-mode 5G Core employs cloud-native, microservices-based technology, encompassing Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and allowing for seamless migration of existing 2G and 3G services to newer networks. Moreover, the addition of IMS will enable UNITEL to offer a range of rich real-time communication services to both consumers and businesses, ensuring broad access across various networks.

In a significant development, Ericsson and UNITEL have conducted a trial data call utilizing the 5G SA network in a real-world setting.
