Currently, 40,178 households, equivalent to approximately 180,801 individuals, are impacted by various weather-related incidents, which include destructive stormy rains, hailstorms, strong winds, floods, and lightning strikes. This marks a significant rise from the previously reported 35,661 affected households as of February 7, 2025.
As per the latest update from DoDMA, a total of 809 households have been displaced due to these disasters. Furthermore, the number of reported deaths has escalated from 35 to 39, with 26 fatalities attributed to lightning strikes and 13 due to the collapse of walls and roofs. Notably, among the deceased are two infants, aged three months, who tragically lost their lives in lightning incidents in Mzuzu City and Nkhata Bay District. The latest count of injuries has also risen to 483, largely caused by lightning and structural failures.
In response to this dire situation, DoDMA has successfully distributed aid to over 80 percent of the affected households. The provisions include essential food and non-food items such as maize, beans, blankets, buckets, and plastic sheets for immediate roofing repairs. The department is committed to continuing their relief efforts and will keep the public updated on the ongoing status and developments regarding the disasters.
