Nigeria Retains Remitta as CBN-Approved Payment Gateway in New Revenue System

The Nigerian Federal Government will retain Remitta as its approved payment gateway, integrating it into the new Treasury Management and Revenue Assurance System (TMRAS). This system will allow for other licensed payment service providers to enhance revenue collections. The initiative, operational since March 4, is intended to streamline government payment processes and improve budget performance.

The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) has confirmed that the Federal Government will continue utilizing Remitta as the approved payment gateway by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). In a statement issued by Bawa Mokwa, the Director of Press and Public Relations on Wednesday in Abuja, it was mentioned that Remitta will be integrated into the new Treasury Management and Revenue Assurance System (TMRAS). This initiative will allow for the inclusion of other eligible Payment Solution Service Providers (PSSPs) to enhance government revenue collection and payment processes.

TMRAS commenced operations on March 4, as per instructions from President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun. Mokwa emphasized that the goal behind TMRAS is to achieve more effective treasury revenue assurances and better budget performance for all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) as well as Federal Government Owned Enterprises (FGOEs). The system aims to streamline and efficiently manage revenue collections and payments.

According to Mokwa, while Remitta is an authorized revenue payment channel, TMRAS will also enable other secured payment platforms to connect and operate. He clarified, “It will not be only Remitta, but all the other payments service providers that are licensed by the CBN will be able to operate.” Moreover, he noted that Remitta remains the exclusive payment gateway for Federal Government transactions and revenue collection for at least two months.

The government intends to take charge of the management of the front-end payment infrastructure and expand the revenue collection system to accommodate additional CBN licensed PSSPs. Mokwa advised revenue payers and the public to continue utilizing Remitta or to visit www.fgntreasury.gov.ng for all Federal Government payment transactions.

The Federal Government of Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to Remitta as a primary payment gateway while evolving its revenue collection processes. The integration of Remitta into the new Treasury Management and Revenue Assurance System will facilitate the inclusion of licensed payment service providers, ensuring effective revenue assurance and improved performance in budget management. Citizens are encouraged to utilize Remitta for their payments, ensuring continued collaboration with government objectives.
