Sudan is experiencing fierce clashes between the army and the RSF, with recent reports indicating six fatalities from shelling on a displacement camp. Ongoing violence continues in Khartoum and Sennar State, with significant civilian casualties reported. The army has regained control over strategic areas, yet massive humanitarian crises persist amid this conflict that began in April 2023.
Fierce clashes have erupted between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum and Sennar State. Reports indicate ongoing combat involving heavy weaponry, resulting in powerful explosions and visible smoke. Additionally, confrontations have occurred in Al-Dali and Al-Mazmum, the last strongholds of RSF in Sennar.
Tragically, a local relief committee in El-Fasher reported that six individuals were killed and several wounded due to RSF shelling that targeted the Abu Shouk displacement camp. Darfur’s Governor Arcua Minnawi condemned the RSF’s actions as severe humanitarian violations, particularly highlighting the siege on El-Fasher.
Furthermore, the Khartoum State Health Ministry revealed a child was killed, and five civilians injured from RSF artillery shelling in Omdurman, predominantly affecting residential areas. Key locations like Al-Thawra neighborhood and Albulk’s girls’ school were both targeted, leading to numerous injuries.
In a counter-offensive statement, army spokesperson Nabil Abdullah announced a successful coordinated operation to eliminate RSF units in White Nile, Sennar, and Blue Nile states. The army reportedly regained control of critical towns, securing Sennar State completely, although RSF continues to hold minor areas in White Nile and Blue Nile states.
The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and RSF, which began in mid-April 2023, has resulted in over 20,000 fatalities and 14 million displaced persons according to the UN. However, estimates from US universities suggest the death toll may actually be around 130,000.
The conflict in Sudan presents significant humanitarian crises, illustrated by the deadly impact of RSF shelling and the ongoing military engagements between the army and RSF. The substantial loss of life and large-scale displacement underscore the urgent need for resolution in the region. Control of Sennar State points to shifts in territorial dominance amid escalating violence.
