Prakash Karat criticized the Modi government and Donald Trump for promoting far-right ideologies, calling the Indian government a ‘Hindutva Corporate regime’ with neo-fascist characteristics. He highlighted concerns over India’s ties with the US, particularly regarding arms exports to Israel, and warned of potential isolation from developing nations due to strategic alliances aimed at countering China. Additionally, he addressed internal criticism from the opposition Congress in Kerala regarding the use of the term “neo-fascism”.
During a recent state party conference, Prakash Karat, a Politburo coordinator of the CPI(M), criticized both the Indian government led by Narendra Modi and former US President Donald Trump for endorsing what he termed ‘far-right’ ideologies. He described Trump’s imperialistic approach focused on American global dominance and characterized the Modi government as a ‘Hindutva Corporate regime’ displaying ‘neo-fascist’ tendencies.
Karat expressed concern that India’s close relationship with the US, particularly in the context of arms exports to Israel during its conflicts with Palestine, positions India alongside oppressors. He asserted that India’s involvement in the Quad alliance with the US, Japan, and Australia is strategically oriented against China.
He cautioned that as the US becomes more aggressive under Trump’s influence, India’s alignment with American interests may isolate it from other developing nations. He stated, “The path this government is taking and its external policies reflect its character, which we have termed as a Hindutva Corporate regime reminiscent of neo-fascism,” as reported by PTI.
Karat also defended the CPI(M) against accusations from the Congress party in Kerala, asserting that the latter was undermining the CPI(M)’s anti-BJP stance by criticizing the use of ‘neo-fascist’ language. He accused the Congress of indulging in ‘cheap politics’ while emphasizing the violence perpetrated by RSS affiliates against CPI(M) members.
He further elaborated, “It is modified, has elements of the old fascism but has incorporated other features like neo-liberalism, and in India, the Hindutva ideology is distinctive; hence we use ‘neo-fascism’ instead of simply ‘fascism.'” The Marxist leader warned that if neo-fascism remains unchallenged, it could develop into complete fascism, likening Trump’s conduct to historical imperialists with ambitions over territories such as Greenland or possible annexation of Canada as the 51st state.
