Sudan has filed a lawsuit against the UAE at the ICJ, alleging its complicity in genocide against the Masalit group by supporting the RSF militia. The UAE denies these claims, which coincide with rising international concern over the severe humanitarian impact of the ongoing conflict in Sudan, where over 20,000 have died and millions are displaced.
On Wednesday, Sudan initiated legal proceedings against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), alleging that the UAE is complicit in genocide against the Masalit people in West Darfur. The complaint asserts that the UAE has provided substantial financial, political, and military support to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, enabling various atrocities such as murder, theft, rape, and other human rights violations.
In its filing, Sudan claims that the UAE has participated in and directed efforts related to the genocide against the Masalit group since at least 2023. The Sudanese government has requested that the ICJ impose emergency measures, urging the UAE to prevent acts outlined in Article II of the Genocide Convention, which includes preventing killings and serious harm to members of the targeted group.
The UAE has categorically rejected the allegations made by Sudan, which were additionally presented at the UN Security Council. The Emirati officials denied any involvement in supplying weapons or ammunition to the RSF, who have been engaged in conflict with Sudanese forces for nearly a year. The fighting, which originated in April 2023, has resulted in over 20,000 reported deaths and displaced 14 million individuals according to the UN, while research from US universities estimates the toll to be around 130,000.
There is rising international and UN pressure for a cessation of hostilities, with warnings of a looming humanitarian disaster affecting millions. The conflict, which has escalated beyond West Darfur, now impacts 13 out of 18 states in Sudan, exacerbating food shortages and leading to famine.
Sudan’s legal action against the UAE at the ICJ highlights the grave accusations surrounding the ongoing conflict in Sudan, particularly regarding the alleged genocidal actions against the Masalit people. The situation remains dire as international calls for intervention grow, emphasizing the urgent need to address the humanitarian crisis as the conflict continues to escalate and claim lives.
