Sudan Pursues Legal Action Against UAE for Alleged Genocide Violations

Sudan has filed a case against the UAE at the International Court of Justice, claiming it is breaching the genocide convention by funding and arming the Rapid Support Forces responsible for numerous violations against the Masalit people in Sudan.

On March 6, 2025, Sudan initiated a case at the International Court of Justice, accusing the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of violating the genocide convention. The complaint asserts that the UAE has been arming and financially supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group involved in the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

According to the statement from the International Court of Justice, Sudan’s case highlights alleged actions carried out by the RSF and affiliated militias. These actions include genocide, murder, theft, rape, forcible displacement, vandalism, and numerous human rights violations, specifically targeting the Masalit ethnic group.

Sudan contends that the UAE has played a significant role in this genocide through its provision of extensive military, political, and financial aid to the RSF militia. At the time of the announcement, the UAE had not issued a statement regarding the allegations.

In conclusion, Sudan’s allegations against the UAE center on claims of complicity in genocide through support of the RSF. The case underscores serious accusations related to human rights violations against the Masalit people amidst Sudan’s ongoing conflict. The outcome of this case may have implications for international responses to alleged acts of genocide and support for rebel groups.
