Camrail Commits CFA12 Billion Annually to Enhance Cameroon’s Railway Network

Camrail invests CFA12 billion annually in Cameroon’s railway system and pays CFA10 billion in taxes. The company emphasizes its role in economic growth through logistics solutions and sustainable practices, as discussed during the Yaoundé Economic Meetings. AGL outlines strategic priorities focusing on efficiency, digitalization, and sustainability in logistics.

Cameroon Railways Company (Camrail), the country’s exclusive railway operator, reports an annual investment of approximately CFA12 billion in rail transport. Additionally, it contributes around CFA10 billion each year in taxes to the government. These statistics were disclosed during the recent Yaoundé Economic Meetings organized by the Cameroon Employers’ Association (GICAM) on February 26-27, 2025.

Alain Minoué, Camrail’s Commercial and Marketing Director, outlined the company’s significant contributions, stating, “Beyond our mobility solutions, we help streamline port operations, enhance corridor competitiveness, and stabilize fuel prices. The railway also plays a crucial role in exporting large volumes of goods, including raw and processed timber, cotton fiber, sesame, and gum arabic from Chad and the Central African Republic. These exports generate significant foreign exchange earnings.”

Since its privatization in 1999, Camrail has managed Cameroon’s 918-kilometer railway network, handling passenger and freight transport. Initially a branch of the French Bolloré Group, it later became a part of Africa Global Logistics (AGL), which currently oversees the network’s operations.

Mama Nsounchiat Fit, Deputy Managing Director of AGL Cameroon, remarked on the importance of the Yaoundé Economic Meetings, emphasizing the need for dialogue with stakeholders, stating, “Our participation was a valuable opportunity to strengthen dialogue and reaffirm our commitment to modern, efficient, and sustainable logistics.”

AGL has established three main strategic priorities in Cameroon: enhancing trade flow efficiency with customized logistics solutions, accelerating digitalization to improve operational efficiency, and creating sustainable logistics solutions to meet environmental goals.

In conclusion, Camrail’s substantial annual investment in Cameroon’s railway network highlights its critical role in the economy, particularly in trade and export operations. The company’s initiatives aim to enhance logistics efficiency and promote sustainability. Participation in events such as the Yaoundé Economic Meetings reflects its ongoing commitment to dialogue and improvement within the sector.
