On March 5, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel commemorated the legacy of Hugo Chávez, who he referred to as “Cuba’s best friend,” marking 12 years since the leader’s untimely death at the age of 58. In a post on social media, Díaz-Canel highlighted Chávez’s enduring impact, quoting him, “One leaves but does not leave,” which he believes reflects the revolutionary spirit that Chávez embodied.
Díaz-Canel asserted that Hugo Chávez continues to reside within the hearts of his supporters and advocates for a better world, stating, “Chavez lives on in the hearts of his people and of all those who believe that a better world is possible, if we fight to achieve it.”
Hugo Chávez was born on July 28, 1954, in Sabaneta, located in the Barinas state of Venezuela. He assumed the presidency in December 1998, and in February 1999, he initiated a Constituent Assembly to create a new Constitution that sought to extend rights and freedoms to previously marginalized Venezuelans, which was approved by popular vote in December 1999.
Sadly, Chávez succumbed to prostate cancer on March 5, 2013, leaving behind a controversial yet influential legacy in Latin America, particularly in his relations with Cuba.
