The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has reaffirmed its steadfast support for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, particularly concerning its southern provinces in Western Sahara. This declaration was made by Secretary General Jassim Al Budaiwi during a joint ministerial meeting with Morocco, where Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita represented the nation. The GCC reiterated its backing of Morocco’s claims during this meeting.
In addition to endorsing Morocco’s territorial integrity, the GCC expressed support for the United Nations-led political process regarding Western Sahara. The council welcomed the UN Security Council Resolution 2756, which was adopted in October of the previous year, extending the mandate of the UN peacekeeping operation MINURSO until October 2025. The resolution also called upon Algeria to participate actively in the political process to achieve a mutually accepted solution to the dispute.
The Resolution emphasized prior roundtable discussions initiated by former UN Personal Envoy Horst Kohler and recognized Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a valid political approach to resolving the conflict over Western Sahara. The GCC also lauded Morocco’s ongoing development initiatives, including projects aimed at enhancing connectivity for Sahel countries to the Atlantic Ocean.
Furthermore, the council acknowledged Morocco’s initiatives such as the Atlantic African States Process and the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project. The GCC also highlighted Morocco’s significant reforms in various sectors, particularly the economy, emphasizing Morocco’s evolving role as an essential partner for several countries globally, notably within the Gulf region.
Morocco has cultivated robust relationships with Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar. Numerous countries from the GCC are investing in Morocco across various sectors, including real estate, infrastructure, and healthcare, which further reinforces these ties.
The Gulf Cooperation Council has unequivocally reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over Western Sahara. The council’s endorsement of Morocco’s initiatives and political stability, along with its acknowledgment of UN-led efforts, establishes Morocco as a vital partner within the region. Strengthened ties and ongoing investments from GCC countries further underscore Morocco’s strategic position in international relations.
