Microsoft has announced a new investment of ZAR 5.4 billion ($3 million) aimed at enhancing cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure in South Africa. This commitment builds upon an extensive prior investment amounting to ZAR 20.4 billion ($1.1 billion) over the last three years focused on establishing data centres in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa, stated, “Beyond blazing a trail in the local technology space, the longstanding presence of Microsoft in South Africa is a vote of confidence in our country and in our economy.” He emphasized that Microsoft’s strategic investments signify the ongoing potential for growth and stability within South Africa’s economic environment.
In addition to financial commitments, Microsoft plans to enhance local skills by training one million South Africans by 2026. This initiative includes providing funding for 50,000 individuals to receive certification in critical areas such as AI, data science, cybersecurity analysis, and cloud solution architecture.
