On Saturday, the Iraqi government announced it had not received any official notification about the cancellation of its exemption to purchase Iranian gas, a privilege previously granted by former US President Donald Trump. Basim Al-Awadi, Government spokesperson, highlighted that dialogue continues between Baghdad and Washington, underscoring the importance of Iraq’s stability for regional security.
In early February, President Trump revoked Iraq’s waiver for importing electricity and gas from Iran amidst new sanctions against Tehran. U.S. media indicated that the exemption would expire on March 7, raising significant concerns regarding Iraq’s energy security and strategic planning.
To address these challenges, Iraq has initiated a comprehensive strategy focusing on both immediate and long-term energy solutions. Al-Awadi disclosed that the Ministry of Electricity secured a contract to import gas from Turkmenistan, contingent upon completing necessary financial and technical procedures. Furthermore, Iraq is in collaboration with the Ministry of Oil to import 600 million cubic feet of gas while exploring the establishment of floating LNG platforms in Basra.
In addition to meeting short-term energy needs, Iraq is committed to enhancing its energy security through diversified investments. This broader strategy encompasses the development of steam and combined-cycle power plants, as well as expanding investments in renewable energy sources, including solar and waste-to-energy projects. Al-Awadi emphasized that “these initiatives are key to strengthening Iraq’s energy security and ensuring long-term stability in the sector.”
