Morocco has officially acquired AH-64E Apache helicopters to boost the capabilities of its Royal Moroccan Air Force. This development, celebrated in a ceremony on March 5, 2025, strengthens U.S.-Morocco security ties and investment in regional stability. Key military officials highlighted the significance of this advancement for combating regional terrorism and enhancing cooperative training initiatives.
On March 5, 2025, Morocco celebrated the acquisition of AH-64E Apache helicopters during a ceremony held at Sale Air Base near Rabat. This strategic purchase aims to enhance the capabilities of the Royal Moroccan Air Force (RMAF) while aligning with U.S. foreign policy and national security interests.
Gen. Michael Langley, Commander of U.S. Africa Command, emphasized the significance of this investment, stating, “By purchasing these Apache helicopters, Morocco has made a significant step in investing in their security and in regional security. This investment now puts them in a new level of warfighting capability.”
The helicopters were delivered to Morocco from the United States, as part of a Defense Security Cooperation Agency initiative announced in 2020. U.S. Charge d’Affaires Aimee Cutrona remarked, “The United States and Morocco have a long history of partnership… Today, we are witnessing the steady and consistent growth of the longstanding U.S.-Morocco security cooperation.”
The AH-64E Apache, developed in 2012, provides advanced features such as enhanced digital connectivity, powerful engines, UAV control capabilities, and improved landing gear, achieving speeds of 150 knots (278 km/hr) and a range exceeding 450 km. U.S. Army Lt. Col. James Anderson noted its advanced weaponry will help the RMAF secure borders and combat terrorism effectively.
Moreover, the Utah Army National Guard has established a unique partnership with Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces, promoting training and deeper ties through the State Partnership Program. Maj. Jared Sorensen from the UTNG expressed enthusiasm for joint training initiatives: “being able to fly and train together here will sharpen our skills and make us a more lethal force.”
Training of RMAF personnel is underway, with 24 pilots having completed training in the U.S. and five more instructors in preparation, with full operational capability expected within six months. Gen. Langley reaffirmed Morocco’s vital role, saying, “These aircraft give the Royal Moroccan Air Force a lethal tool that will enable them to further our mutual security goals in the region.”
U.S. Africa Command oversees military operations to advance U.S. interests and promote stability across Africa. Its ongoing commitment reflects the importance of U.S.-Morocco collaboration in addressing regional security challenges.
The acquisition of AH-64E Apache helicopters by Morocco signifies a pivotal development in enhancing the Royal Moroccan Air Force’s capabilities and reinforcing U.S.-Morocco security cooperation. This partnership reflects over two centuries of collaboration, with a focus on regional stability and advanced military training. All efforts underscore Morocco’s important role as a non-NATO ally and a key player in regional security initiatives.
