The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation has endorsed Egypt’s Gaza rebuilding plan, opposing Trump’s controversial proposal. The plan aims to reconstruct Gaza under Palestinian Authority leadership and calls for international support. While the OIC’s decision was welcomed by Egyptian officials, it lacks acceptance from both the U.S. and Israel, highlighting ongoing regional tensions and the pursuit of a unified Arab response.
Early Saturday, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) endorsed an Arab League counter-proposal to U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial plan for Gaza, which sought to displace its residents. This decision was made during an emergency meeting held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, shortly after the Arab League ratified the plan at a summit in Cairo.
The Egyptian proposal aims to facilitate the rebuilding of the Gaza Strip under the Palestinian Authority’s future administration. The OIC issued a communique declaring, “[It] adopts the plan… on the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza,” while urging the international community and funding bodies to provide prompt support for its implementation.
Trump’s initial proposal drew global criticism, suggesting a U.S. takeover of Gaza and the forced relocation of Palestinians to Egypt or Jordan, which sparked outrage across the region. In response to the OIC’s endorsement, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty expressed hope for expanding support from the broader international community, including the United States.
Abdelatty stated, “The next step is for the plan to become an international plan through adoption by the European Union and international parties such as Japan, Russia, China and others.” He noted ongoing communications with relevant parties, including American officials.
However, the Egyptian plan does not incorporate participation from Hamas, currently governing Gaza, leading to its rejection by both the U.S and Israel. Tammy Bruce, a spokesperson for the State Department, indicated that the plan “does not meet the expectations” of the U.S. Nevertheless, Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, regarded it as a positive gesture, calling it a “good-faith first step from the Egyptians.”
Arab nations have found common ground in opposing Trump’s plan, with Rabha Seif Allam from the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies stating that Egypt is attempting to forge a “broad coalition” against the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza.
The OIC’s endorsement of the Egyptian-proposed plan to rebuild Gaza under Palestinian Authority governance marks a deeper regional commitment to countering unilateral initiatives like that proposed by President Trump. While the plan faces challenges, particularly due to its rejection by key stakeholders like the U.S. and Israel, it reflects a strategic effort to unite Arab nations against Palestinian displacement and seek broad international support for recovery efforts in Gaza.
