Pakistan Endorses Arab League’s Gaza Reconstruction Initiative

Pakistan endorses the Arab League’s Gaza reconstruction plan, emphasizing support for the Palestinian Authority. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar calls for an end to Israeli atrocities while the OIC and Arab leaders work towards international backing for the initiative, despite challenges regarding Hamas’s role.

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Ishaq Dar, has expressed strong support for the Arab League’s plan for the reconstruction of Gaza under the future governance of the Palestinian Authority. Speaking at the Extraordinary Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in Jeddah, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to standing with the Palestinian people and endorsed the Arab League’s initiatives.

Dar emphasized the importance of halting Israeli atrocities against Palestinians, advocating for adherence to international law. His remarks were made as the OIC endorsed a counter-proposal to US President Donald Trump’s controversial plan, which had provoked widespread condemnation and outrage. This decision came during an emergency meeting of the OIC, held in Jeddah just days after the Arab League’s summit in Cairo.

The alternative plan, crafted by Egypt, proposes the reconstruction of Gaza under Palestinian Authority governance, opposing any forced relocation of its residents. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty noted that the emergency ministerial meeting adopted the Egyptian plan, recognizing it as an Arab-Islamic initiative.

Arab leaders, at the Cairo summit, established a trust fund dedicated to Gaza’s reconstruction and called upon the international community to provide support. Abdelatty articulated the goal of transforming this plan into an international initiative through endorsements from entities such as the European Union, Japan, Russia, and China. However, it should be noted that the counter-proposal does not include any role for Hamas, which governs Gaza, and has been rejected by both the United States and Israel.

In conclusion, Pakistan has shown steadfast support for the Arab League’s reconstruction plan for Gaza, emphasizing the need for Israel to cease its violations against Palestinians. The initiatives from the OIC and Arab leaders illustrate a unified Arab response to a significant humanitarian crisis, though challenges remain, particularly regarding the inclusion of Hamas in the rebuilding efforts.
