Women in Guernsey are being urged to stand for elections, with current representation at about 20%. Women in Public Life highlights the disparity with Jersey’s 43% and ranks Guernsey poorly on an international scale. The organization promotes equal opportunities for female candidates and provides resources for those interested in campaigning.
Women in Guernsey are being encouraged to consider candidacy for the upcoming elections. The group Women in Public Life (WiPL) noted that female representation in the States stands at approximately 20%, which is significantly lower than the 43% representation of women in Jersey’s States Assembly. Chair Shelaine Green described the situation as “sobering”, highlighting that Guernsey ranks just above Saudi Arabia and Turkey in terms of female political representation.
Ms. Green expressed concern over the lack of representation, emphasizing that without more women in government, their views and experiences remain unheard during critical decision-making processes. According to WiPL, if Guernsey were to be included in the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s monthly ranking of female representation in national parliaments, it would fall in 123rd place. In contrast, the UK Parliament holds the 26th position with 40.5% female representation.
She indicated that the opportunity for success in elections is equal for both genders, stating, “If a woman stands for election she has just as much chance of success as a man.” Furthermore, WiPL is actively seeking to motivate women to step forward, launching a free Train to Campaign program aimed at enhancing campaigning skills on March 23.
Ms. Green encourages potential female candidates to reach out, saying, “If you’re a woman thinking of standing in June 2025, talk to us. We can help you get up to speed on current issues, understand the election process and plan your campaign.” She adds that support is available, conveying that “your island needs you.”
To connect with WiPL and express interest, women are invited to engage with the organization for empowerment and resources to make an informed decision about standing for elections.
The call for greater female representation in Guernsey’s government is echoed by Women in Public Life, who highlighted the stark disparity between local and Jersey’s female political representation. Chair Shelaine Green reassures potential candidates of equal chances of success, emphasizing the importance of women’s voices in crucial legislation. The initiative to encourage women to stand for election and the offering of training resources reflect a commitment to improving gender parity within Guernsey’s political landscape.
