On a Saturday marked by profound respect, numerous Kenyans gathered to honor the former chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Wafula Wanyonyi Chebukati, at his residence in Sabata, Kiminini Sub County. The event, anticipated to be an occasion for political discourse, evolved into a sequence of heartfelt tributes celebrating Chebukati’s integrity and dedication to public service.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi led the tributes, characterizing Chebukati as an unwavering servant of the people. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula honored him as a leader committed to the law and the Constitution, noting that he made history by managing three presidential elections. Wetangula remarked on Chebukati’s ability to conduct credible elections in a politically charged environment, highlighting his resilience amidst division within the IEBC.

The late Chebukati is survived by his wife and three children: Jonathan, Emmanuel, and Racheal. Family members described him as resilient and dedicated to achieving the best for his loved ones. Various political leaders were present to pay their respects, including legislators and senators from different counties, as well as Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa and other officials who complied with the previously established guidelines barring political regalia and utterances during the ceremony.
