The Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) has had its elective congress election halted by National Security officials, following a breach of an injunction order issued by the Accra High Court. The injunction was requested by Michael Nii Annan Yarboi, a former Parliamentary Aspirant for the Odododiodio Constituency, who cited alleged malpractices in the federation’s election process.
Marie Korkor Agbah-Hughes, a Ghanaian female weightlifter, publicly acknowledged that despite the injunction notice, the federation proceeded with plans to conduct the election on March 8, 2025. This defiance of the court order ultimately led to the election being abruptly halted when National Security intervened.
Agbah-Hughes remarked on the circumstances, stating, “We were supposed to have the Weightlifting [Federation] elections, but there was an injunction sent because the elections committee was running an illegal election. The board for the Weightlifting Federation had their term run out on February 18, but they were still going to go ahead with the elections.”
Currently, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, serving as the Second Deputy Minority Whip for the New Patriotic Party, is contesting for another term as president of the GWF, facing opposition from Michael Nii Yarboi Annan. Rising tensions between supporters of both candidates led to National Security’s presence at the election venue.
The identity of the individual who summoned the National Security officers remains uncertain, though they intervened to ensure an immediate cessation of proceedings after order was restored at the venue.
