Qatar has called on the IAEA to oversee all Israeli nuclear facilities and urged Israel to sign the NPT. Qatari officials highlight the non-compliance of Israel with international nuclear regulations and emphasize the need for intensified efforts to protect Palestinian rights and humanitarian operations. The call for clarification from the ICJ further brings attention to Israel’s obligations within the occupied territories.
Qatar has formally requested the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to oversee all Israeli nuclear facilities. The appeal was articulated during a session of the UN atomic agency by Qatar’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Jassim Yacoub al-Hammadi, who also called on Israel to accede to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). He emphasized the importance of adhering to international commitments regarding nuclear oversight.
Ambassador Hammadi highlighted that the international community must adhere to previously established resolutions from the UN Security Council and other pertinent bodies that urge Israel to submit its nuclear facilities to IAEA regulations. He advocated for intensified international endeavors to prompt Israel to sign the NPT as a non-nuclear entity.
Notably, all Middle Eastern nations, with the exception of Israel, are parties to the NPT and maintain safeguard agreements with the IAEA. Israel is reported to possess between 200 and 400 nuclear warheads, making it the only nuclear-armed state in West Asia and unwilling to permit inspections or sign the NPT.
In addition, Hammadi condemned Israel’s aggressive practices, which include military actions against Palestinians, blockades on humanitarian aid to Gaza, and restrictions on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Last week, Qatar submitted a memorandum to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in relation to Israel’s obligations under international law concerning UN operations.
The memorandum seeks clarification of Israel’s responsibilities regarding UN activities and asserts the necessity for Israel to permit UN and humanitarian operations in Palestinian territories. It also calls for the protection of UN properties and personnel. Ambassador Hammadi reaffirmed the critical need for the international community to take decisive action against Israel to comply with international resolutions and recognize the right of Palestinians to self-determination, thus contributing to stability in the region.
Qatar’s appeal to the IAEA underscores the urgency for international oversight of Israeli nuclear facilities. Highlighting Israel’s nuclear capabilities and non-compliance with the NPT, the Qatari government calls for global intervention to ensure adherence to international resolutions. Furthermore, the request for clarification from the ICJ emphasizes the need to protect humanitarian efforts and reinforce Palestinian rights amidst ongoing aggression. This stance reflects Qatar’s commitment to regional stability and international law enforcement.
