IGAD Urges Restraint and Dialogue in Response to Nasir County Tensions

The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, has expressed significant concern regarding the escalating tensions and armed confrontations in Nasir County, South Sudan. These developments present a serious threat to the progress achieved in the implementation of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), endangering the peace within the nation.

Dr. Workneh has urged all involved parties to exercise maximum restraint, reaffirm their commitments to the R-ARCSS, and prioritize the necessity of dialogue and reconciliation as vital components of a sustainable peace strategy. He emphasizes the importance of collective efforts by the Government of South Sudan, local authorities, and stakeholders to de-escalate tensions and foster reconciliation while ensuring civilian protection and regional stability.

In response to the current situation, IGAD plans to send a high-level delegation to assess conditions on the ground. This delegation will engage with the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) to discuss measures aimed at restoring calm and furthering the peace process.

As the guarantor of the Revitalised Agreement (R-ARCSS), IGAD reaffirms its strong commitment to ensure full implementation while collaborating with regional and international partners to promote peace and security across South Sudan.
