Türkiye’s ambassador to Uganda, Fatih Ak, highlighted the essential need for hygiene products for women during an event for International Women’s Day. TIKA donated equipment to Msichana Uganda to facilitate the production of reusable sanitary pads, aiding women’s access to hygiene and promoting economic independence. The initiative is part of Türkiye’s broader commitment to women’s rights and development cooperation in Uganda.
On Saturday, Fatih Ak, Türkiye’s ambassador to Uganda, emphasized the significance of essential hygiene products for women and girls during an event commemorating International Women’s Day. The gathering marked the donation of equipment by Türkiye’s state aid agency TIKA to facilitate the production of reusable sanitary pads, addressing the needs of young women in Uganda.
The donated equipment, which includes sewing machines and overlock machines, was presented to Msichana Uganda, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young girls and women. Ambassador Ak expressed pride in this initiative as part of Turkey’s ongoing development cooperation, saying, “Development cooperation is a vital pillar of the strong and multifaceted relationship between our two countries.”
Since the early 2000s, TIKA has executed 94 projects in Uganda, aiming to positively impact various communities. Ak noted, “We are proud to support Msichana Uganda in its mission to improve the quality of life for women.” He expressed hopes that the newly donated machinery would further assist Ugandan women.
Historically, Türkiye has been a pioneer in granting women’s rights, including the right to vote in 1934, well ahead of many European nations. Murat Cetin, TIKA’s country coordinator, underscored the project’s potential to create job opportunities for young women while promoting hygiene awareness.
Cetin reported that TIKA contributed five sewing machines, two overlock machines, and specialized fabrics to enhance hygiene standards for producing reusable hygiene products. Winnie Nakandi, director of Msichana Uganda, expressed gratitude for the support and reaffirmed the importance of empowering women to promote justice and social prosperity, stating, “We remain steadfast in our struggle to support underprivileged girls and women.”
Reusable sanitary pads serve as a cost-effective alternative to disposable products, particularly for low-income earners, ensuring better access to essential hygiene for women in Uganda.
