Vanuatu PM Revokes Lalit Modi’s Passport Amid Legal Troubles

Vanuatu’s Prime Minister has canceled Lalit Modi’s passport following his citizenship application, amidst ongoing legal troubles including allegations of financial misconduct. Modi, the former IPL chief, fled India in 2010 and remains under investigation. Vanuatu’s Citizenship by Investment programme has become significant for its economic contributions and expedited services.

Jotham Napat, Prime Minister of Vanuatu, has instructed the Citizenship Commission to revoke the passport granted to Lalit Modi, a fugitive businessman. This decision follows Modi’s recent attempt to surrender his Indian passport at the Indian High Commission in London. Notably, Modi acquired Vanuatu’s citizenship through its Citizenship by Investment programme, which has drawn attention due to its rapid process and financial implications.

The situation surrounding Modi is serious, as he faces multiple charges, including bid-rigging and money laundering. Formerly the vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), he fled India in 2010 while being investigated for various financial crimes like unauthorized fund transfers. India continues to actively pursue legal avenues against him, reaffirmed by Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs.

Vanuatu’s Citizenship by Investment programme enables individuals to acquire citizenship and a passport within 30 to 60 days, costing between $135,500 and $155,500, or approximately Rs 1.18 crore to Rs 1.35 crore. This initiative contributes roughly 30 percent to Vanuatu’s national revenue and uniquely does not mandate residency for applicants seeking citizenship.

In conclusion, the revocation of Lalit Modi’s Vanuatu passport underscores the ongoing legal challenges he faces in India. The actions by Vanuatu’s government reflect heightened scrutiny on international citizenship programmes, particularly concerning individuals with pending criminal accusations. Modi’s case serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding citizenship by investment initiatives.
